Update from the Education and Training Division

Aug 11, 2010 by SUPERINTENDENT

On 01 September, 125 recruits are scheduled to commence basic recruit training at the Academy. On 16 August 2010, 30 newly promoted sergeants will commence their training as will 30 new lieutenants on 07 September.

The new driver training facility is up and running at O’Hare Airport, and officers are being put thru driving skills classes as quickly as instructors and equipment permit.

The Harvey firearms range has been re-acquired for rifle training at least thru 30 September, allowing for carbine qualifications to continue.  Additional rifle training facilities continue to be pursued.

Finally, all school officers will be invited to the Academy for re-training this month as it’s that time of year.  Training bulletins, videos and curriculum continue to be developed in areas such as tactical arrests, firearms, defensive tactics/weapons retention, legal issues and courtesy/professionalism/ethics.

Stay safe!

Comments:

Supt. Weis,

Last year the Shotgun Certification program was available at the Harvey range and officers registered to attend via the E-Learning system. However, this year it appears we have reverted to the old CPD system of qualifying as few officers as possible with a traing matrix which allows only a limited number of officers per unit to qualify with a shotgun. Amazing; considering the situations and frequency of armed encounters that officers are involved in every day, that CPD officers aren't allowed the use of a basic police tool like a shotgun. Supt., I think you have done a great deal to bring this antiquated police dept. somewhat up to speed...is there something that can be done to allow every officer the opportunity to qualify with so basic a weapon as a pump action 12 gauge shotgun. In the FBI, aren't all agents (and recruits) qualified reguluarly with both a shotgun and a carbine in addition to their handgun? I'm sure you would agree CPD officers are in greater need of the availability of tools like these than the average FBI agent. Thanks for your time Supt., I know you're often stymied by others in your attempts to advance this organizaton.
